The REFRESH ‘blade table’ was displayed on EuCIA’s booth during JEC World 2025. A sticker showing the partner logos was fixed to the top.
orld 2025 the REFRESH project’s ‘blade table,’ an example of wind turbine blade repurposing, was on display on EuCIA’s booth.
REFRESH is exploring both recycling and repurposing strategies for end-of-life blades. This picnic table explores an alternative approach to repurposing (J. Joustra et al., Structural reuse of high end composite products: A design case study on wind turbine blades, Resources, Conservation and Recycling, Volume 167, April 2021) which involves the segmentation of the blade into standardised elements.
Reproduction of this design is the REFRESH project’s first step in exploring this strategy prior to developing an original design based on a similar methodology.
The table was realised by REFRESH partners CETMA. leader of WP6: Circular by Design, and ETAT9, which has been optimising technologies for cutting blades, taking into account sustainability, health and safety, and economic considerations.
The table was made from a Senvion LM45.3 blade (glass fibre reinforced composite). The panels were produced by using waterjet cutting and joined using epoxy resin and mechanical fasteners. The table top was made from the outer part of the blade and top surface was painted white. The seats are made from the inner part of the blade.
We thank Jelle Joustra for the design guidelines for this table, and to everyone who helped us test our new table during JEC World on 4-6 March.
REFRESH demonstration products
Further products were on display on the REFRESH booth at JEC World. These included structural panels for building and
construction applications manufactured using the Gees Recycling mechanical process, and skis incorporating fibres recovered using the Gjenkraft advanced thermal process.
There was also be a blade tip display created by ETAT9.
